Champs League: Gakerata 0-1 SRM - Report
SRM FC grabbed their 1st competive win as Shahrom's strike seals three points.
Who are they?
Debutant SRM might be rather more than that on the strength of this performance. The underdog were written off in most quarters before a ball was kicked in their season but all players showed they mean business with an emphatic win on Gakerata. A second-half strikes, thanks to ‘kindness’ of opposite goalkeepers, is enough to secure the first win for SRM FC in their first flight ever in the league.
One hour before the kick off, the weather was heavily rain and almost postponed the game. But the referee said the game still on and the player have to set their mentality to fight in a mud pitch. The goalkeeper, Nisham, protected by Aziwan(right back), Faris(left-centre back), Shauqi(right-centre back) and Meegan(left back), leads the defense line. With Kenneth Tan providing a solid base in midfield, the skipper, Luqman and Ammar broke quickly to support the front three of Shahrom, Haniff and Chap. And after an even opening, the pendulum swung SRM’s way.
Achep almost broke the deadlock before the break but the flag were up already. The Gakerata keeper did not have to wait long for another test of his credentials. Just before the half time, Shahrom dribbled past two defenders and shot from narrow angle but his effort was deny by the goalkeeper.
Luqman, having done a great job at the midfield, floated a perfect delivery towards the far post from 40 metres out. Shahrom had peeled off cleverly, thanks to the keeper’s mistake and powered an easy goal past him.
There’s an awfully long way to go, of course, but SRM have laid down a marker. The early signs are promising to say the least and proven that they can produced some sublime football in both first and second half.
Simple but brilliant football.
